What do I know

So I was talking with my father this evening, a man who spent a couple of decades as a creative director (and therefore has a special place in his heart for Don Draper) and he thinks the Utterly Repellent M&S campaign is brilliant. "I'd be very pleased if I came up with that," said he. He's of the opinion that, known for their less than beautiful suits, Marks and Spencer are having an hilarious joke with themselves and us. I suppose they are.

REPEL ME!!!!!!!

  1. Alex: very interesting, that’s why there’s really no substitute for experience. Your dad sees the whole M&S advertisement completely different than the general public, but that’s where the creativity takes hold. I assume that now that M&S has laughed at themselves. Their next campaign will probably feature an upgrade in their suit line.

  2. Hmm, good point - in fact, Sam read somewhere that they're planning a 'Mad Men' inspired range of suits. Perhaps they'll up their game then. We're hoping they have a slogan like 'I'm Mad!' or 'Utterly insane' for those...

  3. Interesting to hear an experts side of things. At least we're talking about M&S and their range of suits which is ultimately the whole point of advertising!

  4. Ah!!! Advertising works! And most importantly, if I'm ever somehow in need of a water repellent suit, I'll know where to find one.

  5. The concern I have is that they are coming from a position of having an 'old men's clothing' reputation. If they're trying to open up a younger audience by using footballers and edgy straplines that's fine, but... I don't believe that the ad subverts our original perception, but actually reinforces it. The ad's focus on trousers is the real no no for me, what with its implications of incontinence. It's left me reeling with shock!

  6. That's a good point... Reminds me of this classic sketch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDhETFcgWTE
